GEOGRAPHIC DENOMINATIONS

A protected geographical indication is the name of a region used for products originating in that region, provided that it has a certain quality, reputation or the other characteristics which may be attributed to that geographical origin and whose processing or production or preparation take place in a delimited geographical region.

An Industrial Property Office forwards the application after national proceedings to the EU Commission for Agriculture and Countryside Development, that approves and registers the name according to the Council Regulation (EC) No 510/2006 of 20 March 2006 on the protection of Geographical Indications and Designations of Origin for Agricultural Products and Foodstuffs. The name is then protected in the all territory of EU. This regulation does not

apply to wine products and to spirit drinks except of vinegar.
